Weight Loss Surgical Center now accepting Missouri HealthNet

Missouri HealthNet has contracted with Weight Loss Surgical Center's hospital partner
Weight Loss Surgical Center is now accepting Missouri Medicaid patients in the Missouri HealthNet program, as is Blue Valley Hospital, where its surgeries are performed.

Missouri HealthNet participants should have a card similar to the one pictured to the left.

People with Missouri HealthNet who are interested in getting an adjustable gastric band, commonly known by the brand names LAP-BAND System or REALIZE Band Solution, should be aware of the state's requirements for gastric band surgery for weight loss.

To be qualified for weight loss surgery, patients must:
  • Have a Body Mass Index of 40 or higher
  • Have at least one weight-related health conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, gastric reflux, sleep apnea, etc.
If you are ready to start losing weight so you can get more of life, request your initial consultation for LAP-BAND Surgery today.

Comments

For some obese people, trying to lose weight in the normal way through dieting will fail, meaning they will have a far greater risk of health problems. It is at this point gastric banding should be considered.

Sometimes surgery is a good option. I felt like a new person surfaced after my surgery. I am healthier. I exercise. I am happier.

In 2007, out of desperation, I chose to have the Lap-Band surgery at WLSC. Dr. Negro (who I hear is no longer practicing) was my surgeon. My insurance didn't cover the procedure. When I went for the consult, I was "encouraged" to get the surgery as soon as possible. NO 6 month wait, NO psych consult... etc... SO, we took out a second mortgage on our home and got a $17,000 loan to pay cash for the surgery. Now it is 2012. How much weight have I lost? Not an ounce. Understandably, I am already not a fan of WLSC or bariatric surgery in general.

Today I was walking through the mall and saw a sign in front of WLSC "We now accept MO HealthNet" (Medicaid - translate - tax-payer monies for the poor).

What the heck?????

What is wrong here?

This baffles me beyond all reason. I'm in debt for a failed surgery, cannot have the band removed (even though it has landed me in the ER for pain and horrible side effects) because my surgeon lost his license. And now MY TAXES ARE PAYING FOR INDIVIDUALS TO HAVE THIS PROCEDURE FOR FREE????

Speechless....

My name is Shannon Halvorsen. You may contact me at 816-224-8739. I would love to banter about this subject.

But I don't think so the weight loss surgery is good option, it may be sometimes good for those who are enough fat or weight more than their capacity and for those who can cut their weight by workout or diet plan, don't need of weight loss surgery.

Hospital billing can be difficult to explain, but every hospital has a charge master, and every hospital is legally required to charge each payer the charge master price. It may seem counterintuitive, but the insurer sets the price they pay regardless of the hospital’s billed charge. The hospital WLSC uses has a high charge master rate because it is a small private hospital that is out of network with many insurance carriers.

Insurance carriers tend to pay out of network providers a small percentage of the billed price. Sometimes, they will pay quite well, but some will only pay a few hundred dollars. The billed rate must be high in order for the average payment to justify staying in the business of providing services to our patients. Insurance companies almost never pay the billed rate to an out-of-network provider. It's like the opening bid in a negotiation - the insurer will simply pay a lower price. Usually, it's much, much lower.

Jady G, I'm glad your journey is going well, and I'm sorry you feel this way. I know we train our staff to explain this as thoroughly as possible to avoid such frustration, but there is a lot to cover before surgery, and maybe sometimes that is not clear enough. As far as the day of surgery, the hospital's policy at that time was to release patients as soon as they were able to walk and tolerate fluids. We have since changed our clinical policy which now requires our band patients to stay in the hospital overnight.

Ms. Halvorsen, while Dr. Nigro does not currently perform surgeries for WLSC's hospital, he is still licensed, and he still performs surgery at another local hospital.

The president and COO of our company took up your offer to contact you a few weeks back. It sounds like your band may be too tight, and coming in to get fluid removed from your band might help you find relief without going through another surgery. We have several offices in Kansas City, and we'd be happy to have you in for a visit to discuss your concerns with one of our healthcare providers to determine what is the best medical decision to help you find relief and hopefully weight loss success, too.

I have been jumping through my insurance's hoops for 7 months and have finished only to find out that on your end the person that submits medical records to insurance didn't go over all info to make sure it was there so they sent it anyway and guess what I was denied and then recieved it from my GP and sent it again but the medical clearence letter guess what I was denied again!!!!! Now that she has everything she goes on vacation for a week so guess what I'm waiting on her. I have never had this much trouble with a medical service ever and have been in the medical feild for 15yrs. Mexico is looking and sounding better ever day.

I haven't had my surgery yet but I must say that Im on pins and needles with excitement. My journey began when I started getting fat. Pretty sure that began at birth as I was 11 lbs. I am extremely pleased with WLSC thus far. I know there are risks with any surgery but the risks of being a fatty mcbutter pants out weigh the risk of lapband. I'm doing this. I can't think of a better place to have my surgery then WLSC. Everyone is so supportive and are just as excited as I am. I feel like I'm a part of a weight loss team that was specifically designed in my honor. I'm ready for my surgery. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me and I'm taking it. Thank you weight loss surgical center.

Peggy - I'm not banded yet. I only need my psych eval then I'm good to go. If you have an android phone there is a lapband app on there and its full of success stories. Plus all kinds of great info, people, help and you can even find a lapband buddy/mentor. I'm on it. Its really cool. Look me up! We can be lapband buddies.

I have anxiety and mild depression. . What are you looking for on the psychology evaluation? Would this disqualify me?

Peggy- with the lapband app I'm on there as jaye282. Look me up!!
@lotus....no I don't think it would disqualify you, however, I think you should be honest about it. I think mainly what their looking for is that you can follow directions because if you can't lapband won't wwork for you.

I had my surgery done at the Weight loss surgical center in, Overland Park Ks. That is also where I receive all my fills. Love the Nurse Practitioner that does my fills. She is so confident and very intelligent. She's also not afraid to rip my ass for being late as she takes her job very serious and is always busy. I always look forward to my fills. I had a great surgery and really liked the surgeon who performed my surgery. If I had to do it all over again I would definitely go back to WLSC in Overland Park Ks. I'm losing weight and love my lapband! My only complaint was the bedside manor of the nurses after my surgery. But, my after care nurses make up for that. I would do it all the same way again! I even love the front desk lady, Amanda.

I am awaiting approval from my insurance. It has only been two weeks today since my consultation however, it seems I have been waiting a lot longer. I am eager to get my new life started. Is there anyone on here that lives in the St.Louis area? Would love to talk with anyone who has had the lap band and hear of how it went for you,any tips you can offer.
Looking forward to hearing from someone.
