Not losing weight with your lap band?

If you have a LAP-BAND or REALIZE Band, and you aren't losing weight, there are a lot of things you should check before saying it didn't work for you.

You can make a lot of adjustments when you have a lap band.Weight Loss Surgical Center prepared a series of five blog posts about adjustments you can make to reinvigorate your weight loss efforts and get the most out of your band.

Here are the five lap band adjustments to make before declaring failure:

  1. Do you need an eating adjustment? (Nutrition, food journaling)
  2. Time for a behavior adjusment? (Sticking to the rules, identifying satiety)
  3. Time for an activity adjusment? (physical activity)
  4. Time for an attitude adjusment? (Confirming commitment, setting realistic expectations)
  5. Time for a band adjustment? (gastric band fills)

We do our best to help people set appropriate expectations about what life with a LAP-BAND or REALIZE Band is like, but that message does not always get through.

The truth is that losing weight with a band is work, but when used correctly a lap band can be a powerful tool to make the work of losing weight much easier.

But it is still work.

If you're ready to start losing some serious weight and keep it off for good with lap band and these other adjustments, sign up for our free kit of weight loss surgery information to get started.

I have been banded since 11/11 and so far have only lost 60lds. I work out very often and I really don't eat that much because whatever I eat much of it comes right back up. Sometimes its even hard for me to keep fluids down. I don't understand for the life of me why in the past 6 months i haven't lost anything. I have even for the past few months been taking fasting pills to assist me.nothing is working anymore and im getting tired

60 pounds is really good. That's some people's goal. I understand that you are hoping to lose more, but don't forget to celebrate your success.
The band should not make it difficult to keep fluids down. You may be too tight, and as counter-intuitive as it sounds, a tight band can actually cause weight gain. Take a look at the links within the article for some tips, but you really ought to go speak to your band care provider in detail to get to the bottom of your struggle.

I found I lost weight very slowly when I was first banded. I had the surgery June 16, 2012 and by New years I had only lost 40lbs. I average 10 lbs or less a month. Then this past Feb, I finally found that sweet spot. I would eat out and I couldn't even finish half of my meal. I did a lot of take out during this time. Since then, I have dropped another 45 lbs and exceeded the goal my doctor had set for me. Before I had the surgery, my doctor told me I should loose 50 to 75 lbs in the first year. I'm going to my 1 yr anniversary weigh in on Friday and I'm at 85 lbs lost. I can honestly say it was a struggle in the beginning and many times I wondered if I didn't waste my money. I've spent additional time with a dietician to discuss my food choices and I still check in with her. I also do monthly visits with my doctor and discuss my concerns. He is always positive and reminds me I don't want to loose a large amounts of weight in such a short time. I want my body to rebound naturally. It takes time and with the right support, I think you will continue to loose weight!

I had the lap band since 2007. I have not lost about 5 lbs. I have I had the lap band since 2007. I have not lost about 5 lbs. I have been so depressed in the last few years that I have stopped a lot of my social activities. I am very embarrassed because I have people in my corner that I feel I have let down. The good news is I have not gained any weight. In the first year I was faithful with my adjustments, exercise and eating regiment. I know it is a life style change but it is also a mental hardship for me. I would go to the group sessions but no one really wanted to hear the hard time you were having. They only wanted to talk about the successes which made me stop talking. The group is supposed to make you feel like a looser not a loser. I use to be such a happy and active person. I FEEL LIKE I AM DYING INSIDE.

I had the band surgery 5/12/2010. My doctor's goal for me over 3 years was 120 lbs. I lost 125 lbs within 1.5 yrs. I never bought protein drinks. I did have protein powder and made my own chocolate peanut butter smoothies but that is as far as protein drinks I went. I ate whatever I wanted only in small amounts. I followed the rules to a tee. Then one day I was eating salad and apparently didn't chew a piece of lettuce and it laid over my opening and I got majorly stuck for the first time. I mean majorly stuck. I had a little episodes but to that point have not been where my throat was having spasms because of it. I ended up having to take the fluid out of the band and let it heal for 4 months. I gained 25 lbs back. I slowly started getting fills again. Now more than a year and a half later I have only lost 10 of the 25 lbs I had gained back. I do not need a fill as I get stuck easily. After doing awesome at first I am struggling daily. Do I regret it? yeah sometimes. But if I really look deep I can't regret the weight I have lost. I have another 95 lbs to go. I need support which I no longer have. Everyone needs a support structure in place. I think people assume it will be easy and it is more work I think than a traditional diet because this 'diet' you can't just quit and pig out. There are real, almost instantaneous, consequences to straying from the 'diet'.

I had Lap-Band on May 17, 2013 at first I lost 14 pounds in the first 2 weeks and nothing now, I mean nothing. I follow what they told me to the tee, I am beginning to wonder if I did the right thing?? So very sad thought I would be down more than this seems like all this hard work and all the sacrifices I have made are for nothing!!! If anyone has any suggestions I'm open to them PLEASE
Thank you, Debbie
Good Luck Everyone!!!

I had the band put in 2-13 and lost regularly the 1st 4 months. Now I'm struggling. I've decreased my intake but still not losing. I'm discouraged. I want to lose 25 more pounds. Need some emotional support.

I had mine put in 5/15. I lost 25 pounds easy then stopped. They tighted my band and tighted it too much had to get some taken out. Was getting sick every day but lost 5 more pounds. Now that it's still tighter I am losing again. I've lost 30 pounds since 5/15
Posted @ Tuesday, August 13, 2013 8:35 AM by Tammy
Thanks for the support. I'm scheduled to get my band tightened today. I hope this will be the start of another round of weight loss. I just hate to go to the doctor. Makes me feel like I'm not trying hard enough.

Sandy I felt the same way when I went to the doc. I felt like I wasn't trying. Had lost 25 pounds then went to the doc and didn't lose any since my last visit. I think I have it jump started again with my last fill

I'm 5 mo post lap band and have lost 35lbs and my BMI down to 32. I had my final fill today. I want to lose another 20-25 lbs. Dr said 40-50 lbs is the average lost and its up to me if I lose the rest of. I'm experiencing a plateau....hate it! I want to get going again!
Posted @ Tuesday, August 13, 2013 7:07 PM by Sandy
I had my final fill yesterday and I'm so sick. Up all night with nausea, vomiting, and severe heartburn. I can't even keep liquids down. 3 hours before his office opens and I can talk to him. Hope I can hold out.

I went through the same thing last time I was filled. It's too much they backed off .5 ml and now i'm fine. I threw up everything for a week before I got back to the doctor.

Dr can't get me in till tomorrow. What the real problem is that I can't take my meds. Would be nice to take a couple Tylenol for this raging headache. Nurse said tiny tiny sips of liquids. How did you function feeling like this?
Posted @ Wednesday, August 14, 2013 9:46 AM by Sandy
I was miserable for 6 days but i thought about the 5 pounds I lost and that gave me an incentive. But I was miserable!!!!!! When they take a little out you will be just fine.
Posted @ Wednesday, August 14, 2013 11:13 AM by Tammy
I got yesterday's 1ml band fill removed today. I was in such pain. I'm going to recover for a bit and start the fill again. Back to my plateau. What a difference a day makes!

I'm so glad I found this site! I was banded July 2, 2013 and had lost 19 lbs, but then gained back 1 lb. I am struggling with eating the right foods and with portion sizes. I did not want to get an adjustment because I thought that meant failure. The doctor told me it would help and I think it has. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

I had surgery on 6/4/2013.
I have lost 15lbs, I was hoping to lose more by now though. I have only had 2 fills and have a hard time keeping things down now so I will not be getting a fill anytime soon. Can anyone tell me the percentage of body weight they have lost. I have only lost 10% which I do not think is real good.

I have lost 31 pounds. I have add about 4 fills and even had to have some taken out once. I haven't lost in in about a month. Had my surgery on 5/15. I go back to the doctor on 10/3 and i'm determined that I am going to show a loss the next time I go. I haven't lost any in a month but it's my own fault I have been going out to eat too much with my friends at lunch. I can't eat as much but enough that I am not losing weight

So I was banded in March. I have lost 46 lbs since then, but not a lb since my last doctor's visit which was 2 months ago. I have had 2 adjustments and still I haven't found my "sweet spot" I'm a little discouraged. Any ideas as to how I can kick into gear again?
My best friend had hers done in October of last year, and we just celebrated her first year. She's down 100+ and looking amazing ^_^ I just feel like I am doing something wrong.....

I have a hard time too with the band. I had surgery Oct. 2012. Every month I faithfully went to Dr.'s visit for the entire year. Just when I thought I was finished with appointments, something got stuck and the Dr. Withdrew all my fluid. I lost 30+ lbs before emptying my band which I had expected to lose much more. I have to admit that I did not do what I was instructed to do. I learned my lesson and when the Dr begins my fills again, I will try it their way instead of my way.

I was banded June 2010 and lot 40 lbs in the first 3 months and not another pound since. I walk a mile a day and eat half of what I once did. Very depressing. I think what happens is your body has now adjusted to you being that weight and now you have to either exercise more or eat even less. I'm thinking of joining weight watchers. along with the band, maybe I can lose more. Sometimes I think I was just meant to be fat.

I had my band done November 2013. I have had a few fills but no results I feel it's not working 4 me. When I ask the dr what size band I had he said their all the same. I went 4 adjustment assistant said I should some restriction but I don't. I gained 1 pound he he put 1 cc in. So I have a total of 8.5 cc he said if I don't feel anything then he wants 2 start taking the fills out. I'm very disappointed I was hoping 4 better results.
