Not losing weight? Time for an eating adjustment?

If you have a LAP-BAND or REALIZE Band, and you aren't losing weight, there are a lot of things you should check before saying it didn't work for you.
This is the first in a series of five "adjustment" topics.
Do you need an eating adjustment?
Are you getting appropriate nutrition? Are you eating 60-100g of protein per day? Are you eating 25 gm of fiber each day? Are you eating your protein first? Are you getting two servings of calcium per day? Do you eat plenty of vegetables that are not potatoes?
Are you over-doing high-calorie foods? Are you eating liquid calories (juice, soups, alcohol, soda) that rush through your gastric band? Are you snacking on junk food or fast food? Do you avoid starches like pasta and rice?
Write everything you eat in a journal to see if what you believe you are doing matches up to what you're actually doing. Sometimes little cheats add up faster than we realize.
Finally, a tip some might find surprising: avoid diet food and drinks.
Diet meals tend to not taste as good as real meals, which are more satisfying. Real butter and other old-fashioned foods aren't as harmful to your waistline if you're keeping to the portions you should with a Lap band.
Also, artificial sweeteners are not such a sweet deal, after all. Some health care providers believe that some artificial sweeteners actually stimulate your appetite, and they can be hundreds of times sweeter than regular sugar, teaching your body to like things too sweet.
Remember that your Lap Band or Realize Band is only a tool and can only work well if you use it properly. The most basic step toward successful weight loss with a gastric band is to feed your band - and yourself - properly.
