LAP-BAND Patient Success Story: Jen's 1-2 Punch

LAP-BAND and Boxing were a 1-2 punch for Jen's weight loss success!

One year ago today, Jennifer went in for her LAP-BAND Surgery at Weight Loss Surgical Center. That was her in the picture before her adjustable gastric banding experience began. That was also one year, 158 lbs and more than 103 inches ago.

Jennifer had initial success with losing weight with her LAP-BAND and was working out, as instructed by her practitioner at Weight Loss Surgical Center, but she soon began to grow bored with her workout routine.

That's when she joined TITLE Boxing Club to really kick her weight loss into gear.

But going from struggling with morbid obesity to duking it out in the ring was initially a stressful experience for her.

"I have to admit, I was scared to death to walk into the door," says Jennifer. "I'm so glad I did. It's the most fun I've ever had exercising in my life."

So just six months and a couple weeks after her surgery, she began with TITLE boxing, not able to do a single jumping jack. With her instructors' encouragement, she worked at her own pace, building strength and confidence. Today, she can do 50 or more jumping jacks. Then, her resting heart rate was 80 beats a minute; now it's 40. Plus, she's losing weight and inches.

"Overall since having lap band surgery and starting to exercise regularly, I've lost over 103 inches and 158 pounds," she says. "It only took a few weeks after I joined the club to notice results. My clothes were looser, I saw some muscle definition, I could do more exercise reps and my flexibility increased tremendously. Just since December, I lost five inches off my hips and waist."

Jen is realistic about how the LAP-BAND Surgery has worked for her; she's quick to note the surgery is a tool to help you restrict your diet. She knew that to achieve sustained weight loss, she had to exercise and eat right. So Jennifer hits it hard four times a week, mostly in boxing classes.

Jennifer says she can run and not feel like she's going to pass out now. And she can do the sit ups and jumping jacks and punch the bag the right way.

Not only has Jennifer followed Weight Loss Surgical Center's advice on eating right and exercising, she has also sought out support through Weight Loss Surgical Center's Overland Park LAP-BAND Support Group, which meets every third Saturday at 11 a.m. in Weight Loss Surgical Center's lobby. She's a regular attendee, offering her experiences and support to help others beginning their journey while seeking out guidance and tips from others. She also occasionally participates in our online LAP-BAND Support Group, Banded Together.
