Gastric Band Blog Post: A word from my wife

One of our patients who recently had a REALIZE Band Surgery has started a new blog about his adjustable gastric banding experience, and his wife is getting in on the blog act, too.
I'm happy that Margi is telling her part of the story, because there's not a lot of support out there specifically for gastric band patients' spouses, even though their partners' life changes may affect them dramatically.
One patient's wife at our Overland Park Bariatric Support Group once explained to me that her biggest adjustment was to her husband suddenly becoming the center of attention, because everyone wanted to talk about his successful weight loss with a gastric band.
In her post on Wayne's blog, Margi talks about what happens outside of the operating and recovery room. She explains the timeline and talks about how Dr. Drahota came out and explained - in plain English - how his gastric band surgery went.
She also wrote a day-by-day log of what was going on with Wayne from her perspective, including his insistance on working for a full day just a week after his REALIZE Band surgery.
As her story progresses through Friday, she gives us a sneak peak at what dining out with a newly banded patient was like. The result?
Yay! We CAN go out to eat! That's something we really enjoyed before his surgery. I was wondering if that was something we would have to forego for a looong time and now I know we can still enjoy that together!
I have met Wayne on several occasions, and Margi ended with a story that confirmed what I already knew quite well: Wayne's a good guy. She said that she had been avoiding popcorn to not tempt him with one of his favorite treats, but he surprised her by bringing her a bowl, and he was able to resist the temptation.
I'm very happy that she has chimed in and told her perspective this early in Wayne's weight loss journey. They seem like a wonderful and supportive couple, and I'm sure that will help him have success in his effort.
If you have a gastric band spouse story you'd like to share, feel free to leave comments below, or share it in our support group forum.
